Catalogue design for Ongoing Matter

My design of this 104 page, hard cover, image wrap catalogue showcases the work exhibited in “Ongoing Matter: Democracy, Design, and the Mueller Report.” A traveling, multi-platform collection of new poster designs that mobilizes political engagement with The Mueller Report, this catalogue includes expert interviews, artwork from contributing artists, exhibition photos, the contributor's design process, and reflections from the "Ongoing Matter" project. The book design references "hidden" information and meaning that is buried-between-the-lines; for example, snippets of the original government Report are tucked into the gutters of certain spreads, only visible when a user does the extra work to crack the spine. Another example is the motif of the "x," a pattern that both signals "no," dismissal, or buried content, used throughout to guide the reader.

Ongoing Matter, co-created with Anne H. Berry of Cleveland State University, is the multi-platform exhibition of contemporary design artifacts, including posters, brings the words of the Mueller Report to life visually, making the text more approachable and providing entry points for learning more about the report content. Ongoing Matter also calls average citizens to respond to what has become one of the most consequential political moments in modern history—a moment when the integrity of American elections and democracy itself is at risk—by reading Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s words.

The goal of the Ongoing Matter project is to make The Mueller Report more accessible to a wider audience, and subsequently facilitate increased engagement with its findings. A series of over thirty posters have been designed to illuminate the major threats to democracy as cited in The Mueller Report. The collection is currently traveling around the United States (five exhibitions have already been confirmed for the next eight months). Additionally, a digital platform will showcase the artwork in an effort to prompt interactive engagement and participation with The Mueller Report from both designers, creatives, and members of the general public who may not be able to view the exhibit in person.
